Originally intended to be a Christmas present trip for Andrew - the scenic flights were cancelled due to bad weather - the trip down to and around Mt Ruapehu still turned out to be a worthwhile drive. Being summer, we found it possible to walk up from the ski resort to an outcrop overlooking a valley. Down from the mountain, we discovered rapids, waterfalls, bees, and a huge car yard full of old, rusting wrecks.
